Support services and tools
You may not always know whether one of your workers is experiencing mental ill-health or illness. Even if you do, they may not want to speak openly about what they are going through. But you can still help them get the support they need.
Consider the following for managers or workers in your workplace:
- Free online mental health training for managers and free expert WHS advice is available now
- mental health and wellbeing programs
- programs to create positive workplace culture to build morale and encourage people to seek help early
- training and resources to help everyone build skills to stay well at work
- eHealth pathways
- mental health support services with trained counsellors or psychologists
- peer support programs.
There are many types of support available to help you and your team stay mentally healthy or recover from mental ill-health.
Your workers may benefit from access to an employee assistance program (EAP) or the opportunity to speak with trained professionals, such as counsellors or psychologists, who can provide support and help build skills to stay mentally healthy. Some larger workplaces may be able to provide these services in the workplace, while smaller businesses may choose to refer their workers to external professionals.
To find someone to support you, your workplace or your workers:
- find a psychologist through the Australian Psychological Society, or call 1800 333 497
- access mental health services using this directory on the The Centre for Rural & Remote Mental Health website
- find an employee assistance program provider through the EAPAA
- access rehabilitation and recovery at work providers with the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) directory.
Many organisations offer mental health and wellbeing programs and support services for workplaces. Before you engage a provider you should ask about and consider their relevant expertise, accreditation, experience, if their programs and services are supported by evidence and the right fit for you.

Simple ways to stay well at work
Part of creating mentally healthy workplaces is providing access to programs, tools and or resources that boost your workers’ mental health and wellbeing. These may include:
- understanding mental illness
- building resilience and staying mentally fit - get tips from Heads Up, SuperFriend or for small businesses from Ahead for Business.
Workplaces are a great place for developing friendships, so sometimes a worker may prefer to speak to one of their colleagues about their mental health. Provide your workers with the resources they need so they can recognise the early signs of mental ill-health, be supportive and connect their colleagues to support when needed.
SuperFriend has developed a peer-support booklet which includes suggestions for listening to and supporting colleagues who may be experiencing mental ill-health or illness.

There are many free or low-cost, easy-to-use apps and online services that build skills, knowledge and capability. They can help you:
- develop personal resilience and skills to look after your mental health and wellbeing
- have conversations about mental health with others and offer support
- stay connected

Black Dog Institute
myCompass is a free online, interactive self-help program. It is designed to address mild to-moderate symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression through personalised treatments delivered online. Watch this video about myCompass.
Headgear is a smartphone app, which provides workers with a simple, engaging and anonymous way to assess and monitor their mental health. It assesses individuals’ risk for future mental health issues and guides users through a tailored 30-day mental health challenge that aims to increase wellbeing and reduce their risk of future mental health problems. Access the app to improve your mental fitness.
Rawmindcoach is a coaching tool designed to help workers develop skills to become more resilient, prevent mental ill-health and enjoy mental health benefits. This program is available by paid subscription. Find out more about RAW.
Virtual Psychologist provides a free service to drought affected farmers in remote areas offering psychological support and education in real time. Farmers can access the services through SMS, online chat, email or phone with referrals to face to face services when required.
The Centre for Work Health and Safety have recently partnered with Virtual Psychologist to help improve mental health outcomes for farmers in rural and regional NSW. Find out more about this research.

- Beacon is an online portal of websites and digital tools relating to mental and physical health that have been reviewed by experts – you can filter by topic, audience and level of evidence.
There are many digital tools available to help you stay mentally healthy. Before choosing an app, make sure it's effective - check that it is supported by evidence.
Get the most out of support services
Want to make sure you’re providing your workers with the right support, when they need it? Measure access to services or resources, and participation in mental health programs and activities. You can also ask your workers for regular confidential feedback. This data and feedback can be used to inform future planning, see what’s working and what’s not, find what services workers and managers consider most valuable to them, and get the best value out of services for you and your workforce.
